This is in response to all of the Tosh.0 business I’ve been hearing about:

When I was 17 I was raped by somebody I had known my entire life.  I was not out to anyone.  I was injured, quite badly, and took myself to a hospital.  I was too afraid to call the police and refused assistance when the doctor tried to get police involved.  I just wanted it to go away.

Aside from the cuts, black eye and swollen lip I was told I had to come back in six months to be sure I didn’t contract a disease.  Those six months were the most terrifying days of my life.  I constantly pictured scenarios of telling my parents I had a terminal disease or even an STD.  I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror without hearing the words said to me as I was violently violated.

Nobody ever tells you when you’re young that this could happen to you, especially males.

However, on any given day you can hear thousands of people treating the word “rape” like it has an acceptable place in our society as a joke.

I’m sharing my story (that I still have a hard time admitting) with pride.  A story that should show you just how horrifying rape is.  We all have an opportunity with this Tosh.0 incident to spark social change.  Take my pledge to help your friends and loved ones understand.  Help them understand that rape is not a joke, and compassionate support is the only human thing to do.  Help those who are victims become fearless survivors.
